Solo the Wonder Dog

Dell Children’s Comprehensive Care Clinic is the only multi-disciplinary medical home for the most complex children in Central Texas serving over 600 children with special needs who, along with their families, are dealing with highly stressful experiences.  It is critical that the staff finds ways to decrease stressors and increase positive experiences for these patients.  One highly effective service used in pediatric healthcare settings is the use of Pet Therapy. However, this center needed funding to bring their very own pet therapy dog on staff. A group of donors came together in the community to pool their funds together and raise enough money – over $25,000 – to get Dell Children’s is very own…Solo the Wonder Dog! Having Solo join the team at the Comprehensive Care Clinic has had such an incredible impact on the children, their families, the environment, and the staff. Research shows that when children in a medical setting interact with a therapy dog, they feel more at ease, feel less stressed and anxious, feel increased positivity, are more willing to comply with painful procedures, recover faster and do better with the overall distraction.  The grant Dell Children’s received funded their new furry friend, Solo the Wonder Dog as a full-time staff member working 40 hours a week alongside his trained handler.
