Restructuring ATX Public Transportation to be Cleaner and Safer

There are always many safety and health concerns that need to be addressed and dealt with quickly when it comes to public transportation of large groups.  In Austin, Cap Metro is the public transportation that many count on. When you add a COVID-19 pandemic in the mix, this makes for even more challenging concerns that need constant attention. Keeping the public's safety and health in mind is a top priority. With cases spiking in and around the Austin area, it's even more important. Here's what's up thanks to DO512.

What CapMetro is Doing

  • Takes temperature scans at the entrances to their buildings.
  • Adjusts their service schedule.
  • Providing face masks for those who need them.
  • Encourages social distancing with “skip-a-seat” signs on their vehicles and sidewalk decals at bus stops and transit facilities.
  • Installs plexiglass barriers that separate operators from customers.

What CapMetro Asks of You

  • Wear a face covering: This is required for all customers riding CapMetro vehicles.
  • Maintain safe social distancing when waiting at a transit facility and boarding a vehicle.
  • Practice good hygiene. Wash your hands frequently for at least 20 seconds.
  • Maintain safe social distancing when possible while riding CapMetro.
  • Stay home if you can.
  • If you feel sick, please stay home and do not use CapMetro services.

CapMetro Gives Back
During the past 3 plus months... 

  • Provided 2.5 million necessary trips to grocery stores and medical centers for people traveling to work an essential job.
  • Served 45,000+ critical trips for MetroAccess customers.
  • Provided service to homeless individuals.
  • Hired part-time cleaners to clean and sanitize buses throughout the day.
  • Partnered with H-E-B, Good Apple and Farmshare Austin to provide 306,000+ meals to vulnerable members of the Austin community.
  • Implemented a Supplemental Leave Policy to ensures sta­ff members can take care of themselves and their loved ones and not worry about their employment status.
  • Extended fare-free service to people experiencing unemployment who have received an approval letter or email from the Texas Workforce Commission during the public health crisis.
