BOIL WATER NOTICE LIFTED!

BOIL WATER NOTICE LIFTED: Mandatory emergency water-use restrictions still in place: 
Restrictions will change to lessen the impact on affected businesses and their employees. Current restrictions remaining in place include:

  • No outdoor irrigation
  • No adding water to pools or spas
  • No operation of ornamental fountains
  • No at-home pressure washing, vehicle or surface washing

As of Monday, October 29, 2018 at 10:00 a.m., it will be allowable to:

  • Wash vehicles at a commercial car wash compliant with City Code 6-4-10 (B)
  • Operate irrigation systems for the purpose of testing or repair by a licensed irrigation professional, and
  • Conduct pressure washing using commercial equipment in compliance with City Code 6-4-11 (B)

When it rains it pours! Austin Water has issued a BOIL WATER NOTICE 10/22/18 due to flood waters having so much mud, silt and debris in it. The water treatment system can't keep up, and is being stabilized. This could take several days. For questions or concerns, please contact 3-1-1. Map of the Austin Water Service area 

10/28 Sunday 10:17am: Day 7 of the Boil Water Notice. Testing & monitoring of the water conditions continues. Austin Water tweet  says they are on track w/ the #BoilWaterNotice to be lifted for Austin later Sunday (10/28). An announcement will be made either way. Keep boiling water / using bottled water until further notice.

 


More tips & suggestions after a Boil Water Lift:

  • Run the dishwasher through an empty bleach cycle. 
  • Flush water lines. 
  • Boil faucet screens. 
  • Purge and sanitize water-using appliances, including the refrigerator water line, icemaker, coffeemaker, and tea kettle. 
  • Change your refrigerator's water filter. 
  • Optional but recommended: Run a bleach cycle through your washing machine.
  • Sanitize any water filtration or water softening systems after a boil order has been in effect

  • YOU MUST BOIL THE TAP WATER BRINGING IT TO A ROLLING BOIL AT LEAST 3 MINUTES

  • KEEP BOILING OR USING BOTTLED WATER UNTIL NOTICE IS LIFTED!

  • 10/26 Friday 8:52am: The City of Austin sent out a water quality / Boil Water Notice update: 2 pluses are no rain in the forcast for a few days & floodwaters are slowing. With continued water reduction  by the public and factors the water is getting clearer and easier for the water plants to treat more water.  More testing is being done. Please keep boiling or using bottled water. Keep your water consumption down. ATX;s reservoirs are about 50 percent full and still filling up. Water distribution centers are open today until 7pm, except for Kelly Reeves Athletics Complex which closes at 5pm today!  See the locations when you scroll down ...

  • 10/25 Thursday 12:59pm: Austin Water is "Targeting Sunday" to end the Boil Water Notice in ATX... BUT the river water still needs improving before than, and lots of testing must be clean. Keep conserving & reducing water usage. Keep boiling water or use bottled water to stay healthy. Still in Emergency Water Use Restricitions right now! Stay Healthy! 
  • 10/25 Thursday 12:15pm: Mayor Steve Adler signed a disaster declaration for Austin. "...allows Austin to seek reimbursement for expenses related to our recnet weather emergencies.."
     
  • 10/25 Thursday 5:45am: Doctors warn to NOT become LAX about boiling water or having bottled water to stay safe & healthy! 
  • Please continue to take precautions. Yes, it takes a bit of extra time, but your health is worth it

Things you need to keep doing during the Boil Water Notice:

  • Brush teeth with boiled/bottled water
  • Use hand sanitizer after washing hands in the tap
  • Keep showers short and avoid washing the face with tap water
  • Don't hand wash clothes or dishes with tap water
     
  • There are been14 people who went to the hospital w/ reported stomach issues, but it's not known if the water is to blame. 
  • Austin Public Health is making sure restaurants and food trucks are boiling their water w/ 25 inspectors making the rounds.

  • 10/24 Wednesday 6:48 am ... 10:05 am... 12:56pm : Day 3 of the ATX #WaterBoilNotice. Sounds like the earliest it could be lifted is over the weekend. We must keep cutting our water usage down,and conserve. Distribution sites open up today for those w/ special needs, cannot boil water or need bottled water for work can drop by any of the 7 sites to grab a gallon of water. 1 per person.

  • Update 10:05 am - ​Williamson County also has a Water distribution site open 7a-7p  & until 5pm on Friday for  ATX Water customers.
    They will be asked their zip code & # of people living in the household to receive 1 gallon of water per person.

  • 10/23 Tuesday 3:50pm - Better news than 10-14 Days.. 2 weeks.. to a Handful of Days... City Manager Spencer Cronk said the #WaterBoilNotice in the ATX area will be DAYS, NOT WEEKS. Mayor Adler said Austinites are consuming less water, and to please continue especially w/ the rain moving in tomorrow. "We're no longer upside down, we're refilling reservoirs, but we need people to continue conserving... the confusion of the  county's earlier update... the county is just prepared  for 10-14 days.. "
  • 10/23 Tuesday 12:17pm  - Austin Water says the boil water notice in ATX should only last handful of days.. Earlier the county said 10-14 Days... (whatever is considered a handful?)
     
  • 10/23 Tuesday 10:43am Travis County prepares for boil water notice to last up to 2 weeks. Initial estimate it could last 10-14 days as the water system tries to settle, said Eric Carter, the chief emergency management coordinator for Travis County..."We aren't necessarily at a water shortage," Carter said. "We just have a situation where we have to take an extra step to make sure our water is safe for us to drink.... Carter said around 880,000 users are affected by the boil water notice and noted people can still shower and still wash hands."
  • 10/23 Tuesday 9:30am - Day 2 of the #BoilOrder  Austin Water is working on a low pressure issue. They ask that we REDUCE usage of water by 20%. Take fewer & shorter showers, don't use the dishwasher or washer. Be sure automated sprinklers are off. Don't use the car wash.... Austin Water says we're using 15 Million Gallons more water a day than the the city can supply. This is draining the reservoirs. If you see water waste happening, you are asked to call 3-1-1 and report it.

  • 10/22 Monday 1:45 pm Red Cross warns about sanitizer- Don't rely on hand sanitizer it doesn't kill all bacteria  / parasites that can get you sick. Hand washing w/ soap is encouraged. 
  • 10/22 Monday 1:35 pm - Starbucks is only selling bottled and packaged items in their stores. No longer serving handcrafted beverages until the boil water notice in ATX is over.
     
  • 10/22 Monday 1:11 pm Animal Shelters need help!
  • Austin Humane Society: Taking bottled water donations, clean empty containers a gallon size or larger at 124 W. Anderson Lane, North ATX  Plus Monetary donations to purchase water here
  • Austin Animal Center: 7201 Levander Loop in east Austin needs to get their dogs into foster homes. visit the shelter ASAP. If you have never fostered, the shelter can help sign you up and match you w/ a furbaby who is in need right away.
  • Austin Pets Alive!: 1156 Cesar Chavez St near downtown ATX. Needing bottled water / or water from outside of ATX. Donations can be brough to the area outside Building C. It's medical clinic
     

Bottled water donations needed:

  • Monday 11:30am: Austin Humane Society is asking for donations of bottled water! They are using ony bottled water, or water they are able to boil until further notice. They use around 50 gallons a day to take care of the furbabies. Clean water containers, empty containers gallon size or larger are needed too. All donations can be dropped off at the Austin Humane society 124 W. Anerson Lane over the next few days. Monetary donations are also being accepted to offset the unexpected cost of purchasing safe water for the animals. Those gifts can be made online here

AUSTIN WATER TIPS & DETAILS ON BOIL ORDER: 

DO NOT DRINK, COOK OR USE ICE FROM TAP WATER!!!!

YOU MUST BOIL THE TAP WATER BRINGING IT TO A ROLLING BOIL AT LEAST 3 MINUTES (RIGHT FROM ATX WATER FOR BOILING TIME) LET IT COOL BEFORE USING ... OR BUY BOTTLED WATER!

Examples of when to use BOILED / BOTTLED WATER  

  • water for pets.
  • drinking (coffee)
  • making ice,
  • brushing teeth
  • washing dishes - you can use hot soapy water, but rinse the dishes in boiled water
  • food preparation
  • Lots more here

Boiling kills harmful bacteria and other organisms in the water that may cause illness. You should throw away ice made during the time the notice was issued. Freezing does NOT KILL bacteria!

IS THE WATER SAFE FOR WASHING DISHES, LAUNDRY, AND BATHING? (Monday 10/22)
Tuesday 10/23 update: Please conserve water and reduce the amount you use inside. Water use outside is prohibited!

  • The water is safe for washing dishes, but you should use hot, soapy water and rinse dishes in boiled water.
  • There are no restrictions on doing laundry
  • The water is also safe for bathing.

You are asked to please reduce the amount of water you use. Take shorter showers. Hold off on doing laundry. Don't use the dishwasher. 

What can customers do?

  • Reduce water use as much as possible to ensure adequate supply is available for basic needs, fire protection, public health and safety.
  • Boil water intended for consumption. To ensure destruction of all harmful bacteria and other microbes, water for drinking, cooking and for making ice should be boiled and cooled prior to consumption. The water should be brought to a vigorous, rolling boil for three minutes. In lieu of boiling water, you may use bottled water.
  • Businesses should not use drinking fountains or soda fountains that rely on tap water.
  • Schools are covering up public fountains. Asking parents, if you can, please have your kids bring water with them.
  • Please recycle any plastic bottle / containers and more!
