Monday, January 21, 2019 is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. A day to honor the Legacy of a Baptist  minister and social activist who sought equality, unity and human rights. Dr. King played a key role in the American Civil Rights Movement helping to bring attention to landmark legislation of the Civil Rights Act & the Voting Rights Act. Awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. Well known for his support through Peaceful Protest for the economically disadvantaged and victims of injustice until his assassination in 1968.  Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, the third Monday in January,  has been a federal holiday since 1983.

There are many events taking place in the Austin area this weekend into Monday on MLK Day to honor Martin Luther King, Jr.'s legacy. A civil rights leader who was an inspiration to many around the world with his messages of Peace and Equality. Believing we should all serve each other to build stronger communities together ...  A Beloved Community ... UNITED! 

MLK Day / Weekend Celebrations in the ATX Area:

  • MLK Celebration March, Festival, and Food Drive: Monday 1/21 kicking off with a short program at the MLK statue on the UT campus at 9am (23rd Street & Speedway) .The march wil end at the historic Huston-Tillotson University with a community festival going until 3pm. Central Texas Food Bank also taking donations. Route and street closures 
  • MLK, JR March in Georgetown : Monday 1/21 starting at 12pm at theWilliamson County Courthouse and ends at Macedonia Baptist Church w/ a short program at 12:30 pm. Free. Open to the public
  • United Way of Williamson County is having a day of service in Georgetown: Monday 1/21 starting at 9am. Registration here
  • Volunteer opportunties during MLK Weekend / Day of Service: Saturday 1/19 - Monday 1/21 
  • Southern University hosts Dream Week :  Starts Tuesday 1/22  - Thursday 1/23.  Schedule here    KVUE
