Saturday (9/21) is International Peace Day! The city of Austin joins hundreds of cities and millions of people around the world Celebrating International Peace Day!  IPD started by the United Nations in 1981, and in 2001 the UN invited citizens to commemorate Peace Day through education and public awareness.  

Peace Day Austin was started by Austinite Latifah Taormina as a local initiative made up of different organizaions who encourage participation and observnace of International Peace Day. She also founded the Poems for Peace global initiative that started in Austin 5 years ago. When Taormina moved the team at Motley Crew Media, who shared the Peace Day Austin  journey with  her since it started, took the reigns to create events that welcome the community of Austin to celebrate Peace! 

Peace Day Austin events for International Peace Day on Saturday include:

  • Press Conference & Proclamation on Friday, September 20, 10:00 am ,  Austin City Hall, 301 West 2nd St.
  • International Peace Concert at the Capitol Rotunda on Saturday, September 21, 12:00 pm, Texas State Capitol, 1100 Congress Ave.
  • Global Minute of Silence on Peace Day, Saturday, September 21, 12:00 pm
  • Church Bells Ring in Unity on Peace Day, Saturday, September 21, 12:01 pm
  • Amy’s Ice Creams, special Peace Day Austin flavor, “Peace of Cake” available at all Austin-area locations through September 21 PEACE  OF CAKE - Chocolate Cake Pieces from Baked by Amy's, Fudge Swirls and Rainbow Sprinkles with Cold Pressed Vanilla Ice Cream
  • Tiny Pies, special “Peace Pies” available on September 21
  • El Chile Group, special Peace Day Austin themed cocktails available on September 21 at Yuyo, 1900 Manor Rd; El Chile, 1809 Manor Rd; and El Alma, 1025 Barton Spring Rd.
