Sean Mack's ATX Adventures: Austin's Moon Towers

A slice of Austin's past.

February 7, 2019

You see tham all over town.  You might not even notice them any more.  But there are 14 tall pillars around the city of Austin that are a link to the city's history-the Austin moon towers.  You may remember they were featured in "Dazed and Confused"(although this wasn't a real one, just one used for the movie).

So where did they come from?  According to historians, they started going up around town in the late 1800's in order to provide lighting for the city of Austin.  Remember, this was pre-street lights.  They were tall and would light up large areas.  As technology advanced, the need for them dwindled.  Today, there are only 14 left throughout the city.  But you can see them all in about 2 and a half hours, as my girlfriend and I found out last weekend.  The most famous tower in town is in Zilker park, you may know it as the base of the Zilker Christmas tree!

You can find the other 13 all over different parts of town, from small neighborhoods to the middle of downtown.  It's pretty cool to think they have been here for over a century as the city constantly changes around them.  Here's a look at a few more.

Just google "Austin Moon Tower" and you can find the locations of all 14.  It's a fun way to get in touch with the history of Austin!
