Sean Mack's ATX Adventures: The donut eating championships

How else would you celebrate National Donut Day?

June 7, 2019

June 7th is National Donut Day.  I was fully prepared to celebrate like I had in past years-grab a free donut somewhere, move on with life.

But then, I got an alert on twitter.  There was a donut-eating contest going down at the Barton Creek Square Mall at 12:30.  But this was no ordinary eating contest.  This one was starring a national treasure.  The greatest eater this world has ever known.  The holder of dozens of world eating records.  The legend, Joey Chestnut, was going to be on-hand to try and break his own world record of 257 Hostess Donettes IN SIX MINUTES.  I couldn't get there fast enough.

I grabbed some free donuts and got my spot up front.  They bought out all the competitors and it was time to eat.

After six heart-stopping minutes, it was all over.  The winner was announced...and Joey finished SECOND in a SHOCKING turn of events.

Geoffrey Esper scarfed down 235 donuts to Joey's 200.  I caught up with Joey after the contest, he said he started slow and then got nervous and never got in a rhythm.  Hey, he still holds the world record.  We will all now wait to see him do his thing on the grandest stage of them all-the hot dog eating contest on July 4th.  Good luck, Joey.  A nation is behind you.
