Yes, it gets a little sticky!

Over the weekend, my fiance and I stopped by the Emma S. Barrientos Mexican-American Cultural Center for a sugar skull workshop!  Dia de los Muertos is right around the corner, and the center is offering these free workshops every Saturday in October.  They provide all the materials and show you how to make your own sugar skulls from scratch!

The teachers were really nice and helpful-they even give you a history lesson about the holiday and the importance of sugar skulls.

You need some sugar, of course...mixed with water and some meringue powder.  Throw it all in a bowl and mix it up with your hands!  After putting them in molds and letting them dry, the real fun begins-adding paint and whatever decorations you want.

It was really fun!  If you want to check it out, email lori.navarrete@austintexas.gov or call 512-974-3785 to reserve your spot ASAP!
