Sean Mack's movie review: "Birds of Prey"

Harley Quinn is back!

February 7, 2020

Comic book movies.  Most everybody loves them, right?  Fans have been flocking to see the latest movies in the Marvel universe for years now.  DC comic movies, on the other hand, have had a little less success.  However, that seems to be changing.  In the past year, DC has given us the hilarious “Shazam”, the Oscar-nominated “Joker” and now a Harley Quinn spinoff movie with an insanely-long title: “Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)”.

Harley’s film debut was in 2016’s “Suicide Squad” and she has now become a Halloween costume staple.  Margot Robbie is back-and she is single(after a bad breakup from The Joker) and not exactly ready to mingle.  Now that she is on her own, it seems everyone in Gotham wants her dead-including Ewan McGregor’s crime boss “Black Mask”.  McGregor is one of the highlights of this film-his manic energy is only matched by Robbie herself.

Of course, Robbie is the star of the show.  She really will be remembered for this character when it is all said and done-she owns it and dives right in, and you’re along for the ride.  The movie is fun and hilarious and doesn’t take itself seriously at all, and the action sequences are really top-notch.  Another good DC comic movie?!?  Yes!
