Sean Mack's movie review: "Hustlers"

Let's take it to the club.

The new Jennifer Lopez movie “Hustlers” had a big opening weekend at the box office.  The film took in 33.2 million dollars, good enough for a second-place finish(only behind IT: Chapter 2).

So how is it?  My fiancé and I caught a screening on Friday night.  First off, can we just give props to a Hollywood film that’s an original script and not a sequel or a CGI-filled action affair?  The film(based on a true story) follows the story of strippers who decide to turn the tables on greedy Wall Street executives around the time of the financial downfall of the late 2000s.  However, it isn’t really a story of “good versus evil”-you’ll leave the film debating the rationales of all the characters.

It reminded me a lot of “Wolf of Wall Street”-lots of drugs, sex, and other wild behavior.  Lopez and “Crazy Rich Asians” star Constance Wu are the stars, but there are a lot of scene-stealers along the way.  In fact, two upcoming ACL Fest performers get some of the biggest laughs…both Cardi B and Lizzo had the audience in our theater roaring with laughter.  Overall, it’s a real interesting story.  I’d give it 3 ½ stripper poles out of 5.
