Remembering Luke Perry

Gone way too soon.

March 4, 2019

If you grew up in the 90s, there are five numbers that immediately hold a special place in your heart: 90210.

If you weren't around then or too young to remember, "Beverly Hills, 90210" was a cultural phenomenon.  The show was watched by millions of people every week.  I was always one of them.  The show debuted when I was in high school and ran through my college years.  We would have watch parties in our dorm rooms on Wednesday nights.  There were some great characters-Brandon and Brenda Walsh, Kelly Taylor, Donna Martin, Steve Sanders...and of course, Luke Perry as Dylan McKay.  Dylan was always the most interesting one.  He was the "outsider" with a heart of gold.  The story is that he wasn't even supposed to be a regular part of the show(in fact, he's not even in the premiere episode or the opening credits).  However, show creator Aaron Spelling was so impressed by Perry that he had him written in as a permanent member of the cast.

It was a good idea.  Perry became a huge teen heartthrob in the 90s and the show reached new levels of success.  Dylan was a great character, but only Luke Perry made him unforgettable.

The character of Dylan McKay had all sorts of drug, alcohol and family issues.  Luke Perry, however, seemed to have life pretty much figured out-a successful actor and family man.

Dylan McKay wasn't supposed to make it to age 52.

Luke Perry should have lived a lot longer than that.
